This does depend upon what you require the 4 x 4 to do. for £35k you can buy a new defeder in various forms (long wheel base, short, pick up). This is however a basic high performance off roader.
For a vehicle that has just about the same amount of performance but more luxury go for the land rover Discovery 3 as they are unbeatable. These come with the terrain selector to make off roading easy (ie mud, snow, rocky terrain). You just dial in the surface you are going to drive on and the cpu will select the correct suspension, gear ratios.
If you want to save some cash you can get a fully loaded new Freelander or a two year old Range Rover (both still have the terrain response facility).
Which ever you go for select the diesel engines as these will give good mpg (30 mpg +)
