Since owning VW's since 1976, I would go with a 1994 and newer golf with the 2.0 litre engine. More reliable.

the vw golf 2 is the best ever 1985-1992 except the vw golf g60
especialy gti 16 valves great for acceleration
i am from europe and i used to own one 16 valve
it had around136000 miles on it,very reliable
now i live in the usa but if i found one in good condition i would buy it imeddiately
specafition;
5 speed
139 hp
0-60 in just 7.9 sec
top speed 123 mph
it is a perfect fast small car
to find one it's kind of hard

The Mk II Golf's ('85-'91) are better than the Mk III. It make take some searching to find a good one , particularly an '88 or '89 16-valve, but they are fun, durable, and fairly trouble-free.

It all depends on the condition of the vehicle. I dont think anyone would be able to gurantee 100% a vehicle of this age. It will be a risk anyway.
