Translation for a short Italian poem by Ungaretti ?

this is the poem "Soldati" of Ungaretti the famous italian poet.... :

"si sta
come d’autunno
sugli alberi
le foglie"

Ungaretti is a wonderful poet, but quite free with language rules...

The poem refers to the condition of soldiers, and it is interesting how the poem is not understandable without the title, which defines it.

Litterally:
One is
as in the fall
on the trees
the leaves"

The implication is that in the fall the leaves will all go down, so it hints at imminent death, at the terribly precarious life of a soldier. It also has a graphic hint: a leaf "shakes" on its branch before falling, and the soldiers are scared, afraid of what is going to befall them.

A litteral translation will always require lots of soulful explanation in this case.

Ungaretti wants to compare the weakness of the people (pain ,depression and people tired and insicure...tired of the war for example, because soldati means soldiers) to the weaknes of the leaves in autumn. it's very easy.
