carefully cut round the skin on top of the paint, grab the middle of the skin and lift out letting any excess oil and paint run back into the tin, dispose of the skin by wrapping in several layers of newspaper, get a pair of you old tights and lay over suitable size tin that will hold the paint and pour into that tin.Much easier to go to B & Q and buy a new tin,lot less messy as well.

Go outside put newspapaper under tin. take a sharp knife, and slice all the way round the outer edge of what could be a hard top skin of paint. lift it out, making certain no bits drop back in. Put lid firmly back on, and see how you go.

Yup. Time to pitch it. Even if you could soften it up the color would be altered and there would be lumps.
