How can we curb population growth?

One way would be to have a legal age limit to giving
birth. Perhaps 18 as that is the age we can vote. If
you cannot decide which government to vote for how on
earth should we be able to bring anoth human being into this world? People in third world countries should be offered
some kind of precautions to stop them bringing poor little
mites into this world. Leaders of all countries should pull together to
help world peace then these people would be able to have
their offspring with no fear of them starving to death.

For once I think the Americans might have the answer to this one - the answer is make health care costs so huge that the normal person cannot get access to them thereby reducing life expectancy back to the levels not seen since the middle ages.

As people will die younger the top end of the population pyramid thins out and population decreases.

Hey why not let market economics put housing out of reach to, then focus market forces on food stuffs and clothing - that way no one will be able to feed, clothe or house themselves - hey thats gotta work.

So, all you have to do is vote Republican at the next election.

I have to answer this with a question - what makes you so sure we need to curb the population growth. I've not seen any evidence to suggest we're overpopulated. I'm not sure how many more billions we can handle, but we're certainly not there yet.

Why do I believe this? Because we have the food to feed everybody (easily), the water is available and so are the other raw materials. What we do have is issues of moving resources around. Primarily the problems are political and financial - the areas in most need are the poorest so there is little financial incentive.

As countries get richer, population growth decreases almost to the point of zero pop. growth. Ex. most western countries have growth rate of -1% to 2%, and that's natural growth, most African nations have a growth rate of 5-10%. This is because in western countries you don't even think of having kids until after university, and after getting a job, by this point you can't have too many kids.

So the key to pop growth is a healthy world economy.

I think the way humanity is going we don't have to do anything.

By the end of the century there will be millions of 'climate refugees', pushing north from uninhabitable areas like Bangladesh, into countries like India and Pakistan.

Latin Americans will cross the U.S. border in their millions, African refugees will flood Europe and china will choke on it's own success as the western world boycotts Chinese goods in protest over pollution.

Asia has more than enough rogue and maverick states. Nuclear war is practically inevitable under the pressures this region will experience.

The Middle East is a pressure cooker waiting to blow.

A nuclear terrorist attack on the U.S. would bring all of Americas' hell fire on any suspected states, triggering who knows what?

With starvation, disease and war resulting from one or more of these scenarios in the future, I think overpopulation is a problem that will always sort itself out, once it reaches 'critical mass'.

Otherwise, sterilise people who scavenge off the state benefits, they seem to breed like bloody rabbits, they're nothing better than a human form of vermine.

It will happen naturally. Eventually the environment will become less suitable for a particular species and something more suitable will take its place. This goes for any life bugs/flowers/cats/dogs/insects/humans etc.

The current view of scientists is that due to global warming this will happen sooner rather than later.
