I know the hot and cold months are the opposite times from the N hemisphere-- so I assume Dec/Jan/Feb etc are called "summer"--etc.
Sorry to be dumb!

Not dumb at all, yes the hot months are called summer. Summer starts on the 1st December and ends and the end of February, then Autumn which is March, April, May. Then winter June, July, August and then the best time of all spring! September, October, November. I hope I have helped :)

WINTER
Astronomically, this is the period between the winter solstice and the vernal equinox. It is characterized as having the coldest temperatures of the year, when the sun is primarily over the opposite hemisphere. Customarily, this refers to the months of December, January, and February in the North Hemisphere, and the months of June, July, and August in the Southern Hemisphere.
summer is the opposite. :)

Of course. Don't believe anyone who tells you that cold weather is called "Albert' while hot weather is called "Mary". We do have the 4th of July too but nobody takes any notice of it.
