In the Old Testament, God told Abraham that He will be their God, and they(Israelites) will be His people. That was a covenant between God and Israel . Therefore, the Jews are the chosen people. The sign is that every Jew should be circumsized to show that covenant. No one knows the date , of course. When Jesus came, the new covenant was expanded to all those who accept Jesus as the Messiah and profess their faith in Him. So in a sense, the chosen people is the new Jerusalem or better known as the Church of Jesus Christ( Christian believers).

If you believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God, and that his mother was the Virgin Mary, who was Hebrew, then since God chose who to bear his earthly son you can assume he wanted a Jewish mother, and it happens that, as He must have known, the Jewish faith passes matrilinearly to the children. That is very unlike most faiths that pass from the father to the children. The notion of a chosen people has had many meaning, from chosen to bear the brunt of the hatred in this world, to chosen to be the people from whom the Messiah will, or has already come.
But honestly now, if you want to complain to God about his policies, then you know how to do it.
Very, very carefully.

God chose a people through faith in Jesus Christ. He made a covenant with Abraham to bless and multiply his seed and all the world has been blessed through his seed, singular, which is Jesus Christ. At the cross the covenant with the Jewish nation was finished because the testator died, which means the covenant is no longer in effect, and God made a new covenant with his people, the Israel of God, which is all those throughout history who are saved by faith in Jesus Christ.

It's a mystery...

No, seriously, although I can't answer your question in the particular, I can tell you that the notion of a "chosen people" refers to responsibility, rather than preferential treatment. And, despite pervasive Biblical and cultural references, there have been groups other than Jews who considered themselves "chosen."

Ironically, while the notion of being a "chosen people" is sometimes used to elevate one's status, its spiritual impact should be the opposite: humility, respect for God's word and his children.

Good question.
You'll get a lot of different answers.

In truth, there is no "one group" that can claim superior status to the universe, only relative superiority according to their cosmology (view of the universe).
