Well, to be a counsellor, you need to have a good level of English, preferably Higher or A-Level, depending on where you live.

To start with, you can do some volunteer work in a call centre - the Samaritans and Childline train their volunteers in basic counselling skills, so you could do this and find out if it's something you really want to do.

You then have to go through formal training, which is made up of different modules (units) and once you have done a certain number of these you are a qualified counsellor. You will have to register with a register, most counsellors in the UK are registered with the Brittish Association for Counselling and Psycotherapy (BACP, although I think (don't quote me) that you can register with others. Then you can either work as a member of the NHS, or as a private counsellor. Good luck!

Check out bacp.co.uk

There are also some universities that offer BACP approved courses in counselling. The only one I am familliar with is a part time course at Aberdeen University.
