I am not an expert at photography, so would like something fairly uncomplicated! Thanks.

Makro is selling a SONY cyber shot s500 for only £59.99p at the moment. 6.0 megapixel, 3 x optical zoom/ 2 x precision digital zoom, 2.4" LCD screen etc etc.....
This is the cheapest 'easy to operate' camera I have ever seen.
Check Makro in your search engine for nearest one to you.

Look at Website dpreview.com In general the Canon SD 600 got very good reviews. I'm not opposed to recommending a camera I bought my daughter.Fugifilm FinePix S5200. It's 5 megapixels, 10X optical zoom, great on batteries (re-chargeable). When enlarged takes excellent 8X10 prints. 1 second delay between shots.A bit larger than a compact.

take a look at the panasonic lumix fx-01
tiny, nice looking, 6 mp, seems user-friendly...

$229.99 on amazon and they have a memory card special going on.
keep in mind that with any digital camera out there you'll probably need to get an additional memory card, so factor that into your price comparisons.
happy hunting!
