You've got the perfect combo!
Saute ONIONS and GARLIC in oil. Add CHOPPED BACON and saute for 1-2 minutes. Add 1/2 cup LENTILS then add 1 1/2 cup chicken broth (or any other kind of broth...water will also do but it will be less tasty.) Boil then simmer until lentils are soft. Add salt and pepper to taste.
here's another recipe for lentil soup..you can just substitute the sausage with bacon...
Lentil Sausage Soup
1 pound French green lentils (recommended: du Puy)
1/4 cup olive oil, plus extra for serving
4 cups diced yellow onions (3 large)
4 cups chopped leeks, white and light green parts only (2 leeks)
1 tablespoon minced garlic (2 large cloves)
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon minced fresh thyme leaves
1 teaspoon ground cumin
3 cups medium diced celery (8 stalks)
3 cups medium diced carrots (4 to 6 carrots)
3 quarts Homemade Chicken Stock, recipe follows, or canned broth
1/4 cup tomato paste
1 pound kielbasa, cut in 1/2 lengthwise and sliced 1/3-inch thick
2 tablespoons dry red wine or red wine vinegar
Freshly grated Parmesan, for serving
In a large bowl, cover the lentils with boiling water and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Drain.
In a large stockpot over medium heat, heat the olive oil and saute the onions, leeks, garlic, salt, pepper, thyme, and cumin for 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are translucent and tender. Add the celery and carrots and saute for another 10 minutes. Add the chicken stock, tomato paste, and drained lentils, cover, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for 1 hour, or until the lentils are cooked through and tender. Check the seasonings. Add the kielbasa and red wine and simmer until the kielbasa is hot. Serve drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with grated Parmesan.

Lentil soup is easy to make. you don't need to soak them.
A word of caution. If you don't have a really large pot only use half your lentils, when you cook them the swell to double the amount.
I make mine like this:
1 tablespoon oil,
1 medium onion, diced
1 clove garlic diced
1 rib celery diced
1 carrot diced
1 bay leaf
water, or vegetable stock, or chicken broth
any amount of bacon you prefer
salt, pepper
saute all the above....put in your lentils, then cover them with whatever broth you prefer. Keep checking, the lentils absorb the liquid, so add a little at a time.
Cook for about 45 minutes, or until the lentils are soft.
I use curry in mine. The amount is up to you, but start with a very small amount.

Try the following
Smoked Bacon and Lentil Soup
6 rashers smoked, streaky bacon, rind removed and finely chopped
6 oz (175 g), green-brown lentils, washed and drained
1 tablespoon oil
2 carrots, chopped
2 medium onions, peeled and chopped
2 celery stalks, sliced
8 oz (225 g) tin Italian tomatoes
2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
3 pints (1.75 litres) home-made stock
8 oz (225 g) cabbage, finely shredded
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
salt and freshly milled black pepper
Heat the oil in a large cooking pot and fry the bacon in it until the fat begins to run. Then stir in the prepared carrots, onion and celery and, with the heat fairly high, toss them around to brown them a little at the edges. Now stir in the washed, drained lentils plus the contents of the tin of tomatoes followed by the crushed garlic then the stock.
As soon as the soup comes to the boil, put a lid on and simmer, as gently as possible, for about 1 hour. About 15 minutes before the end add the cabbage. Taste and season. Just before serving stir in the chopped parsley
or Lentil soup
55g/2oz unsalted butter
1½ tbsp grated fresh ginger
¼ tsp each ground allspice, ground cumin, and chilli powder
½ tsp each curry powder and ground coriander
2 onions finely chopped
1 parsnip, chopped
1 stick celery
1kg/2¼lb carrots, sliced
85g/3oz split lentils, rinsed
25g/1oz long-grain rice
1.7 litres/3 pints vegetable stock
400ml/14fl oz tin coconut milk
2 tbsp fresh lime juice
3 tbsp chopped coriander
Method
1. Melt the butter in a heavy-based pan and add the ginger, allspice, cumin, chilli powder, curry powder, and ground coriander.
2. Cook over a low heat for three minutes, stirring continuously.
3. Add the vegetables, stir to combine, and cook for a further eight minutes.
4. Stir in the lentils and rice before adding the stock.
5. Bring to the boil and simmer for 30 minutes or until the vegetables are tender and the lentils have started to break down.
6. Blend the soup in a liquidiser or food processor until smooth.
7. Return to the heat and add the coconut milk, lime juice, and coriander.
8. Heat through but do not let it boil again.
9.Serve immediately.

Soak your lentils by covering with boiling water, covering the dish and leaving for 1 hr. Discard the water.
Sauté the bacon bits in your soup pot, along with a diced onion and maybe a clove of garlic. Add a bay leaf, a chopped carrot or two, and a diced potato. Season with salt and pepper and half a teaspoon of ground cumin. Add lentils and about 6 cups (1.5 litre) of broth (or boiling water and a stock cube). Add about 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer covered until done, about 30 min. You might want to add a touch of Tabasco, that's up to you.
Serve with wholegrain bread.

There are many variations of this, as is with most any kind of meal. A great website to check out is All Recipes or even the Food Network. I've included both of their websites below.
By going to either of these websites, you'll be able to view all of the variations and pick out which one sounds best to you rather than hoping one provided to you turns out good.
