There are two theories about the matter, and nobody really knows. As an English speaker, the first one will probably mean more to you. That is that you get them when you're a little older, and supposedly have reached the age of wisdom, you're supposedly more or less grown-up and no longer a child. In other languages, however, the word used for wisdom could also mean (lit.) 'far-standing', i.e. these are the teeth that ar the furthest to the back of the mouth. That might then have been translated into for example English as wisdom teeth.
The reason why you are not getting them any earlier, is that your mouth is still too small, they wouldn't fit in. Many people's mouths are actually still too small when they grow, that's why they often have to be taken out.

Like others have already said. Wisdom is often linked with age, you get your wisdom teeth with age.
Purpose today is limited, in the past good oral hygine was hard to come by. Thus by the time someone was around 20 they may have already lost some of their adult teeth around the back where plague is more likley to build up.

i think they use the word wisdom is because you get them just after teenagehood it may have been the age when many people in the past got married in that country...................wisdom teeth do not make you wise that is up to your mindset many people hace received their wisdom teeth and were wise before they got them or after also many people remove their wisdom teeth and nothing happens to their wisdom.
their purpose was back in the day people because the primitive person originally used their teeth to seperate food items before they found approitate tools

They're called that because they come through as you reach adult maturity (or should) - some time in your early twenties.
They don't change your levels of wisdom, They're just teeth.

I would say their purpose is to help with your chewing. I had mine grow when I was around 12-13 years.
