for example, in the subway train. There are lots of people who fall asleep during the ride. Is it polite to wake them up? because they might miss their stop and be late for work for example.
Or is it rude, what do you think?

Penn Sta NY is the last stop into NY from Long Island, I always nudge someone who is asleep on my way out, if not, they could be there for hours, or worse, go back on a 45 minute ride to "somewhere" on Long Island. Just a slight nudge on the shoulder is O.K., most folks appreciate it, i know I would.

Well, if you woke me up at every stop I'd be a bit annoyed, yes! I think I'd only wake someone at the last stop. I've always woken up at my stop even though I sleep on the train a lot, I wouldn't like someone to wake me at other stops just in case. I'd think most people who fall asleep are confident enough to wake by themselves too, since otherwise they wouldn't do it (most of the time you can after all control it, if I had only a little ways to go or was somewhere I don't know the stops I wouldn't go to sleep). I know you mean well but I go to sleep on my own risk and I don't want to be woken up halfway through!

I would appreciate it, but you never know. It's tough to know whether to disturb people's sleep. Like yesterday I was walking through a parking lot and saw a truck with its lights on, and when I got closer I saw that a person was taking a nap inside (people often take naps in their cars around there). I was worried that his battery might run out while he was sleeping and considered waking him up to tell him the lights were on, but then didn't because I thought he might not like being awakened. I hope I made the right decision.

I like starrypunk's idea of asking them what their stop is so you can wake them when they want to get off.

you must be real brave falling asleep on the subway
and you have to asses the person real carefully, do they look like they live there or are the dressed like hey are going to work, this is biggie. because they just may get scared and jump..that's OK if they are going to work, but if they live in the subway and they jump, they may jump you.
so look, thin carefully before you do this

good luck

It would help if it is their stop. Since you most probably won't know where this stranger is stopping, you could nudge him/her on every stop, or you could just ask so that you could wake them when it's time for them to get off. I'd do that, and I'd appreciate it if someone did it for me.
