What is it with cats chasing their own tale?
I have 3 cats. 2 of them chase their own tale. But here is what baffles me. One cat chased its tale and went round and around and around , did some somersaults and maybe even a flip or two, then victory! She caught her tail. But then she bit it so hard she meowed and screamed and I think she bit it again. Does she know its hers? And my other cat, he will put him self in complete danger and risky situations if he for just a second sees his tail whip in sight. He goes absolutely nuts, like his butt is on fire, again with the round and around and around. I don't get it. If it was just for the chase, then she wouldn't have bit herself like it was an attackers tail. If its boredom, well i think the motion sickness would out way that theory in the end. So, why do cats chase their tails?

Thanks for the question. My nutty cat does this and it is so funny. So I looked it up for us. I guess they don't know it is there tail according to this.

My kitty does this all the time. I don't think he knows it's his tail. He sees it moving and attacks it. He's never bit himself to the point where he meowed. Like your cats he has done his fair share of flips and somersalts. It's soo funny to watch them go around and around. Gives them a reason to get rid of the kitty energy they get.

Thats hilarious. And a good question. My cat chases his tail and even tumbles down the stairs for a chance to catch it. But when i give him catnip its like he thinks his tail is 3 feet long because he never comes close. its fun to watch.

Cats are born hunters, I suppose when they have nothing else to hunt their tail becomes the hunted.
Hope this helps.

My cat does that too, but when she catches it she gets this look of satisfaction on her face. Then she lets it go and the game is on again. I guess it's fun for them, but even more fun for us to watch!

These are play games, and these animals don't take the time to analyze their actions, they just play. They probably play more when there is a human audience, as well.

Of course they do, it's just a game. Like when we do stretching exercises, we do know it is our toes we are trying to reach!
