causing me to lose my footing,
and then get angry with me
if i accidently step on his feet or tail?

if i didn't know better, i would think he WANTED me to step on him.

He's drawing himself to you attention, probably because he wants something. Every cat considers he should be the focus of your attention all the time.
You're supposed, in his mind, to be as agile as a cat and avoid stepping on him and he's disgusted with your ineptitude when you do!
Ours is much the same, with the added attraction of walking all over the phone when you're talking and joining in with the conversation. He can't see why we should be talking if it isn't to him.

He probably wants something, usually with mine it's their way of saying they want dinner or to go outside. Sometimes they'll even run up the stairs (as I'm going upstairs) to quickly stop & stand sideways in front of me a few steps up; in an attempt to stop me going upstairs because they want their dinner.

My cats are the exact same, i don't understand but they must think i've got a big life insurance policy haha!
Maybe its just for attention and they certainly get it when they let out a scream, a wee shame but ther own fault!

He must want to play with you and think you are angry when you step on him

Mine do the same thing, only the youngest attacks my leg when I don't stop.
I believe they want attention and are trying to tell you.
Just stop and give you kitty a pat, maybe that will help, it works with mine.

I call it following from in front....in the lead. He's trying to suggest a course of action you, as his slave, might like to take. OR ELSE !!!!

Mine does the same thing.
It's normally when she wants something, like food or her toilet cleaned.
