Hello,
Hawking is the act of cold calling on peoples homes trying to sell them your wares, or setting up in a road layby (resting place for drivers) and sell to the passing trade goods out of your own vehicle, it is illegal in the UK to do this, which is why we have so many car-boot sales that are organised in the UK, and a hawker can legalise his trade for those days by paying a fee to whoever takes the payments, to legalise his trading as a hawker for that day, and everybody pays, and should get a reciept /ticket for that fee.
See Del-Boy on only Fools and Horses, when he is hawking from a suitcase, telling the people gathered around him, and he tells them "I am not here this morning, and gone tomorrow, I, am here this morning and gone this afternoon" that is Hawking at the most basic ground level. I hope this answers your query........ Bye ....... Tony M

selling goods illegally on the street. Usually hawkers will have a tray of goods to sell but sometimes they also have a cart. Any goods can be sold but food, fake goods and pirate DVDs are common. A cheap place to buy stuff but you might well get crap and obviously, you wont have any 'consumer rights'!!!!!!

Selling stuff on the streets. Some hawkers display their goods either on a makeshift stand or just on the pavement. 'No hawking' is just so the pavements dont get blocked!

Hawking is, as stated above, selling on the streets, but it has an older meaning too. It means that deep phlegmy clearing of the throat and then spitting the contents of that clearing onto the floor. It is utterly disgusting and spreads diseases like TB and so on. This may well be the true meaning as often translators use an older word simply because it has never gone out of currency in their culture.

Selling in the street. As the sign implies, it may very well be perfectly acceptable, where not prohibited. In HK it is an age-old tradition. Often, hawkers sell from mobile stalls or barrows. Food is often sold in this way, hawkers appearing at lunchtime and in the evenings.
