It sounds like your problem now is a chemical imbalance. Probably the best bet would be trying a different medication. Often, life events will trigger a depression, but resolving the issue doesn't always resolve the depression.

I'm not sure what the question is, but, I think everyone feels 'mentally ill' sometimes.
In fact, many probably are, and don't even consider that. You can give yourself a lot of credit for seeking third party help and trying to feel better. That's all any of us can do.
Have you tried some form of exercise? The brain responds happily to fun playing with your body. I don't mean the kind of tired you get from working, but from pushing the body, producing endorphines, increasing serotonin, and in general, a sense of well being.
On the days when you feel weak mentally, stay close to home, and protect yourself more till it passes. Most people do stupid sh-- when they're depressed or upset and later regret it or wonder how 'xyz' thing could've happened?
Also, you might benefit from a group of friends who are upbeat, healthy and going somewhere in their lives to encourage you and inspire you to hang in there.
good luck. I am often depressed too and have learned to ride it out because I have lots of not-depressed days too. If I focus on my depression is feels worse than if I get busy, go for a run, or help someone else with their problems.

are you seeing a therapist? maybe effexor isn't the right drug for you or maybe something like lamictal 100mg can help. if you were diagnosed and prescribed your meds by a general MD or family practice doc you should follow up with a psychologist. i have sufered with depression most of my life and i take 40mg of prozac and 100mg 0f lamictal. this combo saved my life. don't have expectations and don't deny what you are feeling. good luck
