The saying goes, "If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride."

Beggars are people who wish others would give them money/things. If just wishing could cause something to happen, then they would actually benefit from doing it. But of course it doesn't.

I found the following quote from American philosopher, Josiah Royce, and wonder if it isn't a shortened version?

"In idea socialists can dream out Utopias, disappointed lovers can imagine themselves successful, beggars can ride horses, wanderers can enjoy the fireside at home."

Meaning that in a perfect world, or Utopia, those without would have their needs met -- however, what we wish for and what is reality are two very different things. If we want our reality we have to do more than dream - we must make it happen.

I have heard a similar qoute that said "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." This quote means that if wishes all came true, than no one would be in a situation that they didnt want tobe in. It is fairly straightforward.

the saying "beggars can't be choosers" comes to mind.... If beggars have horses (not by choice) then everyone, at the very least, would have horses. Hence we all would ride.

I think it's kind of like what my grandmother told me when I would say when I would wish for something that was unrealistic.

She would say,"If wishes were fishes we would all take a swim."
