I live in the midlands-central England and they have been forecasting snow for a few days. Dudley city council closed their schools down before there was even any snow!
I am concerned that our children will grow up thinking that the world comes to a stop when it snows.
Please don't get me wrong i don't work and don't care that my kids don't have to go in, but i have a housefull of other parents children who've had to go into work.
I remember being a kid and walking to school in so much snow that it would go into my wellies or i'd lose my balance.
i worry that society is teaching children wrongly, i can understand old people staying in or people that don't need to go out but come on, it's just a bit of snow isn't it?

You know its so interesting everyone thats disagreed with me so far goes on about driving there kids to school maybe this is another problem, whats wrong with themm walking! I don't agree with what the one person said about the kids falling and getting run over as i've seen the kids making sledges and throwing snowballs at cars whilst they are off school. I myself have had the kids making snowmen in the back garden, we have a mommy daddy and baby one.

I live in Winnipeg... also known as "Winterpeg" MB, Canada. Right now, it is very very... and I mean very cold. It is -29 celsius... but it feels like -40 with the windchill. Actually- it is warmer today compared to the rest of this week. Last saturday was -50 celsius with the windchill, and there was a lifeguard competition that I was part of and they didn't shut that down.
My car was unable to start, so my buddy brought his ragtop mustang to pick up the six foot long spinal board... we drove top down at -50 celsius with the board sticking out the back of the car for 15 minutes. That was cold.
But unless the transit buses don't run, the schools here are open. And at the grade and high schools I went to, we never had a snow day, even when there was 2 feet of snow falling overnight!
Yes, I do agree that some places coddle the students too much. Kids have to learn that the world doesn't stop because it's cold or it snows.
But on the other hand, kids grow up too fast anyway, so what's the harm in a few snow days to enjoy playing in the snow while they are still young and have the time...

There have been several incidents here in the US where schools were closed before snow because the forecast was calling for quite a bit and it would be dangerous for school buses to be on the road.
There have also been incidents where we would have a bad snow storm while the kids were in school and the schools stayed open instead of closing early. Most of those decisions were just bad calls because a normal 5 minute trip turned into 45 minutes on very slippery roads.

Im just outside london on the surrey border we had snow my kids loved it when the eldest got to school (he is 5) they said leave all outdoor things on we are taking them out to have fun and for a bit they had snowball fights and made snowmen. Let them enjoy it we dont get snow very often. Being out in it is good for them as long as they are wrapped up well, it also kills off all the nasty bugs going round

That is extreme. Then again I was irritated they didn't close my stepdaughters school the other day. 4" of snow and they didn't plow the streets until 3:30pm! If they would spend less time making sure the neighborhood where the mayor lives was clean and helping out the rest of the town... They closed her school on monday though because of the cold. I think it was close to 20 below with the wind chill.

The only logical reason that I can think of for the schools actions of closing down at the possibility of snow is for insurance purposes. I live in a snow belt in Ontario Canada and we rarely close the schools down. If it's bad school buses may not run, and that makes attendance optional for those who bus or can't get a ride with a parent. We know we'll have this wheather so at the beginning of the school year parents have to sign a waiver informing the school how to handle their child in the situation and that they realize due to wheather and conditions they must decide if they want them held at school or sent home as per usual. This protects the school from angry parents who may not want children on busing etc. If you guys don't have this the schools may be covering up the chance of upsetting a parent. Today parents seem to be more jumpy about issues like this. Also we've grown up just dealing with it. We all know how to drive in it, dress for it and deal with it, where I'm sure you don't get alot of it so it freaks people out alittle.
I have to agree with you that it seems aliitle strange anf inconvient to keep them at home if there is snow warning or even aliitle snow. Perhaps you can suggest to you school to draw up some kind of emergency wheather forms so they can feel more comfortable opening the school for this kind of situation

Well, the world DOES come to a stop when it snows, it does in this country anyway!!
I blame the met office etc who give the warnings 'don't go out unless absolutely necessary' when there is a dusting of snow on the ground. I'd love to know who all these people are who don't have to go out.
I got married December 2005 during a period of snow and all the national newspapers were saying 'don't go out unless you have to' and I was terrified that no one would come. But they did!

my childrens school is closed today too. I dont like driving in the snow its dangerous. Many of the teachers probably dont want to drive to the school in the snow either. The roads are jam packed and there will probably be loads of accidents on the roads. Also you get the school children throwing snowballs at car windows and at each other. As for the children your looking after get them all ou the back making a big snowman. lol

I am thankfully able to choose to stay at home now, but I can remember as a child having to walk three miles to school, admittedly there weren't many cars around in those days so it was safer from that point of view to walk. If a teacher couldn't turn up, so what, the rest of them coped often with a little help from older pupils. (I can't imagine that happening today, it would be against the rules or something)
If people stopped relying on their cars, dressed appropriately and walked a bit more they would be a lot healthier in mind and body, and there would be a lot less chaos on the roads.

They close the schools due to the roads being bad out. How would you like it if they had school and there was so much snow on the road or ice and it caused a deadly crash? That is the point of closing school is because of the condtions of the roadways and never in my life have i heard that when school gets cancelled because of snow that it teaches a child that the world is going to stop or that it is wrong.
