Young people choose a from a portfolio of beers depending on occassion, both draft and bottled. They are also more sensitive to price. So while they will drink premium lager occasionally they will often buy what is on offer or the cheapest. In terms of brands these are important when visible. People will feel more self conscious amongst their peers when drinking bottled lager as the brand is visible. Nobody wants to be holding some dodgy or girly drink. With the exception of some branded pint glasses most draught lager is anonymous. However, young people are divided between conformity and individual expression. In a pub environment and on a session there is likley to be a drink that everyone drinks. On the whole yound people will select from a range of 6 or 7 different drinks that match the occasion. It is also important to think about the off trade (which is growing fatser with people consuming more alocohol at home) and the choices made here may be different. Some brands heavily discount in the groceries so that will be compelling to young people.

When I first started drinking beer it was all about what looked the most "refreshing".
And cool.
To me, it was Corona. Because with Corona, you would slip in a wedge of Lime.
And dream about basking in the sun in Mexico..
And because it's a clear bottle, you can see the beer for being blonde, light, and fresh.
On the flipside, I didn't like the darker beers so much. They made me think of hot stuffy pubs serving 'warm' beer.
Gross.
The darker the colour, the less the 'refreshing' appeal.

Next after 'refreshing', comes the 'cool' factor though. I mean let's face it, if Castlemain XXXX Strongbrew or Fosters was in a clear bottle, you wouldn't see me drinking it. The advertising has to be good behind it.

As a very young person (12-13) I litterally went for taste as the alcohol content was around the same in all beers at the time.
In my EXPERIENCES with underage drinkers and as an underage drinker - I found that TASTE mattered.
This however is not my findings with drinkers that are young yet old enough to drink:
There are fads within peer groups that depend on what they deem popular, nothing at all to do with alcohol content or even taste - as the desire to be part of the "IN CROWD" by far outweighs the downside of 'AQUIRING' a taste to a certain beer or spirit.
Movies and the media can be partially responsible for how popular young people percieve a drink.
In my belief - the alcohol levels in beers ought to be lowered and people could have more time socialising with less aggression and more interlect. This would also help the beer trade as there would be less contraversy around bars and pubs if less people got drunk and there was a dramatic decrease in the levels of violence caused by drunken YOUTHS.
After delivering beers to university's - it is most definately media that influence the majority of our youth and so if your looking to alter this- please campaign for better tasting beers with less alcohol and friendly prices!

These days I make my own beer and am a little picky. I have found that as I have grown older I appreciate the taste more and more. When I was young it was usually price, peer pressure and availability. I was not a very discerning drunk. Now I am older and more pretentious about my in-toxicity.
Oh yea, the most important factor was what I could get her to drink the most of.

Obviously the taste is important. So is what is actually available where you are and the price. So is image etc. brands can be like a fashion statement. This last part has a lot to do with advertising by the beer companies and the circle of friends you hang with.

I wasn't looking for anything in my beer. I'd just turned 15, I was in a pub with some older kids and I just drank what every other man was drinking in there... A pint of bitter. It was horrible, but all I wanted was to not look out of place and under age.
Its been my drink of choice ever since.

Holds it's bubbles right til the end.
Leaves a good sticky set of rings down the glass
Isn't in a dirty glass
isn't more than £3 a pint
Is served by a smiley wench
Is followed by another beer the same

yes. its the taste. at least for me. i like light beers like coors light and corona light. its just what you prefer taste wise. some people like darker beer which will have a stronger taste and a higher alcohol content. i doubt everyone cares like i do, but i mean, you usually dont drink something if you hate it, so i think at any age, taste plays a large roll in what beer we drink.
