Nikon introduced this lens with a suggested retail price of $750 but poor availability has pushed the street price up considerably.
B&H has a waiting list for $750 and BeachCamera has it in stock for $900. Both of these vendors are reliable. You might have better luck finding it in stock for (around) $750 at a local shop.
The Nikon 18-200mm is probably the best all-in-one lens you'll find by any brand. It has image stabilization (VR), a massive 11x zoom range, and fantastic image quality for a lens with this zoom range. For more info, here's what a Nikon lens guru has to say:

Everyone loves this lens.
Alternatives are the $340 Tamron 18-200mm and the similarly priced Sigma 18-200mm. But both of these lenses are inferior and they lack image stabilization. There are also tons of 28-200mm zooms, but on a D40 these effectively become 42-300mm so you won't have much wide angle coverage.
You could also consider something like the Nikon 18-135mm or the Sigma 18-125mm. These don't offer the tele-reach of the 18-200 but they can still be considered a viable all-in-one.

None yet ... but don't worry. Canon has been trying to "one-up" Nikon since the early 80's. Since the 18-200mm is so popular, Canon will have to either design one or see some of their users move back toward Nikon. At that end of the focal length the difference between 18 and 28 is huge. Super wide vs. ho hum If you don't already have a lot of Canon glass and a Canon DSLR or SLR, you may want to reconsider your choices (maybe the D300). BOTH cameras are professional quality. Nikon has a couple of unique features that Canon have yet to incorporate in their cameras. 1. Two wheels one for adjusting aperture and another shutter speed. 2. Image Comment where you can embed your copyright information with each exposure. 3. Radio controlled remote multiple flash.
