If I join the army what are the living conditions going to be like? I have a bachelor's degree in accounting but that would only make me an regular E-4 and not an officer unless I take their classes. Which means my living conditions are the same as an E-1. I understand that I have to share a place with someone, BUT I want a private room to sleep in and to store my stuff. I don't mind sharing a bathroom and kitchen, but if I have to sleep and live in the same room with another soldier it's going to suck.

You need to stop asking questions, and please do not join my army. I couldnt stand somone like you in my unit, you whiny little *****. You share a room with 30 to 40 people in basic training, what will you do then? Id say for you, just get a job in some little accounting firm and get your own apartment. Stay away from the army.

It really all depends on any number of things. I would suggest that due to your degree, you come in as an Officer, better pay, better treatment, better lifestyle, etc.... If you decide to go enlisted, everyone that goes to Basic training lives in a large open bay for the entire 16 weeks. After that dependant on your AIT, for your actual job training, you may again be in a bay, or may have a two man room. Once you get to your actual duty station, it depends on how much space is available. You will more than likely be in a two man room, and much of the newer renovated barracks have secluded rooms, with a common kitchen and bathroom. If there is nmo room in teh barracks, you would be given additional money to go rent an apratment on the economy. No matter the situation, I believe that you should decide to join or not join based on other factors, not just living conditions. I have been in the Army for 5 years now, and have loved almost every aspect of it. The living situation never was a factor though...

If sharing space with someone makes you that sick, you need not join ANY of the branches of the military. During your basic training you will live in an open bay with about 50-60 other people. As a E-4 you will probably not have a privae room, the only time I had a room to myself was in Germany. It's not always that bad to share, you may met some of the most interesting people in the world and make some lifelong friends.

Well, I know at Fort Hood, it is set up like a "suite." There are two people per suite. Each person has their own room and closet and they share a "kitchen" area and a bathroom.

But the living conditions shouldn't be a deal breaker when considering joining the army!

You will share a room and bathroom. You will have a foot locker and a regular stand up locked where you can secure your possessions. When you make E-5 you will get a private room. Check the minimum requirements for E-5 and make sure to get boardrd as soon as you are elegible. Rooms today are big and roomy. You can often switch room mates and get someone you like.

as an enlisted soldier, having worked from e-1 to e-5 i can tell you better living quarters come with time in the army. you have to start from the bottom, you already have an advantage but you will still have to serve your your time. one of the points to barracks is for efficiant housing of soldiers, to promote unit cohesion(the ability to work as a team regardless of the situation), and to promote good discipline. as for privacy, even officers have to share from time to time. yes, it is most likely that you'll have to shack up with 1 or more other people. this is just something you are going to have to deal with. when you finally get there it is not usually very bad, sometimes it can make life easier. as far as storing your stuff, the army tries it's best to provide a means of securely storing your stuff, but in the end it's on you to make sure you lock it up. you will find out how serious the army is about security within hours of arriving at basic training. dont let a couple of insignifficat fears deter you from joining the army.

If you can't handle sharing a room with another soldier, I don't suggest joining the army in the first place. If you think SHARING a ROOM with another soldier blows, wait till basic and you have to SHARE a SHOWER with 30 of them.

well i guess you not ready for the army, and there called barrarks not dorms. yes you would live with as many as 2-3 roommates, determining were you go. even here in IRAQ it does not matter what rank you out you have a roommate, i have been in the military for 14 years and i have a roommate here in IRAQ. but like I said you could have a couple of roommates, but once you make e-5 your authorized to live off post. then you can get your own apt.

Oh, poor you, wants to serve his country but isn't willing to sacrifice a little personal space. Boo hoo. What the heck are you going to do when you're in the field and don't even get walls or a toilet?
