Only those who choose to believe these books are holy think that. The majority of the world is non-religious.

It is really only a book of God if you believe it to be so. I think the obsession is that mankind is trying to find out it's past and both religion and science are in play here. Maybe it is a quest to find out just how we began. Each time old books are discovered, it tells us a little more about our past and how people believe we came to be. I believe there is a science to religion and a religion to science. I believe they can both co-exist. As much as I believe science and evolution, something had to have started it all. The only feasable explanation is an Entity much more powerful than us and science. These books obviously hold some clue to it all, thus the obsession.

The holy books like Vedas are not written by any ordinary mortal.
They are revealed knowledge from God so that we can benefit from reading and putting into practice.
First of all, the world we see is not created by a man but by God.
An ordinary man can give birth to his children and therefore he is a creator of his children according to his limited capacity. Similarly God who is omniscient , omnipotent and omnipresent created the whole creation.
After creating, God has given us the manual in the form of Vedas so that we can conduct our day to day activities in peace. Even any manufacturer of computer, electronic equipment or any machine gives a manual so that we operate them properly without messing up anything. Similarly the God Himself has given the manual, His word, Veda, a book of knowledge.
If any ordinary man would show up any book as holy book, he would be laughed at as you correctly mentioned. Similarly, if any ordinary person writes something from his fertile imagination, he would be laughed at also.
The ordinary person(purusha) has four defects, viz. to commit mistakes, to be illusioned, to have imperfect senses, to possess cheating propensity. But, Vedas are called, apaurusha, meaning not from ordinary human beings with four defect. Also originally the Vedas were delivered in aural receptive form from guru to disciple and therefore Vedas are also called as Sruti, that which is heard. Only very recently, around 5000 years back, did the great sage Vyasadeva compiled them in written format.
