I did 10 yrs in the US military, but if I was drafted and had to serve my time all over again, I would gladly and proudly serve my country again. Americans have to understand that the military defends our rights to live the way we do, along with all of our freedoms. I would serve because I know with our freedoms also comes responsibilities that we have to face to defend those freedoms. I also met some of the greatest men and women in America through my time served, from all over the US. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

First thoughts:
1: What the $#$!? I thought we had an all volunteer military!
2: Good thing I joined up first (US Army Reservist here - I ship for Basic Training on 13-Jul and am hoping to get deployed to either Iraq or Afghanistan)

If I were someone utterly different, and let's say I was in the era of the Vietnam war when there was a draft, I think the first thing I would be thinking about is how I would put my civilian life on hold while I was in the service. Bills? Housing? Where's my stuff going to be? Kids? Girlfriend? How can I juggle all this with being in the military?

EDIT: Those of you ashamed to be from the United States or ashamed of what we do, there is a very simple solution: Renounce your citizenship and move. Go to some country where you will be happy, and not ashamed of your citizenship. Americans are proud to be American and always work to better this nation whether they agree or disagree with what's going on at that point in time. If you're not part of the team - agreeing or disagreeing - then get out.

I would simply claim that I could not fight as it is against my religious and philosophical beliefs, I am a conscientious objector. They would then have to find me a desk job or non-fighting position. I would not kill another human being when all other options have not been met and when there is no just cause for killing...self defense is the only reason, I could not kill just because I was told "this person is your enemy" I would say..."why? I haven't heard their side of the story...how can I be sure they aren't right? Or at the very least, that you haven't twisted what they actually have said?". Problems can/should be solved through negotiation.

That is what I would do. I would not be a coward and "dodge" the draft, my daddy isn't famous/powerful/rich enough to allow me to do that, but I would not have to kill or shoot at the 'enemy' as they are called. You can still serve your country and support democracy and not have to fire fight. Look up conscientious objector, it is very interesting, however you must be able to support what you say you believe and prove you believe it.

We don't get to choose our wars individually. I wasn't drafted, spent years in uniform, volunteered for any hot spots that could use me, and still wound up in Arkansas for 4 years. Having grown up in the Vietnam era, I promise those young men who are vocally protesting the current war and think Canada would be a place to go should do so now, and give the rest of us a break. There are proper and improper ways to criticise our involvement in Iraq, and the vast majority of what I see is an embarrassment that the protestors will regret if they ever grow up.

If women were drafted to go to war, my first thought would be how much I will miss my husband.

My Dad enlisted before there was a draft back during whatever war he was 18 during. Smart move, he never had to go to war!

They'd probably put me back in a missile silo in the midwest again. What a life! Paid to do nothing but wait for an order that most likely will never come.

I would of wished that I joined the first place because I would of receive thousands of dollars more than just being drafted.

If it was for a cause I didnt believe in like the current war, then I'd probably move to Canada. I've thought about moving there anyways. I'm all for protecting other Americans and our rights, but I fail to see how running into a country, stirring **** up and causing civil war, and watching as literally hundreds die every day is protecting us.
