Well there is a big difference between the two. Although both are Office applications the targeted users are different.
MS Word is used for creating letters, memos, documents, and other paper works.
While MS Power Point is used to as a presentation aid. Mostly for school reports, corporate meetings or monthly statistics of sales in graph.

MS Word is a Word processing software, while MS Powerpoint is a presentation software.
In MS Word, you can create/edit text documents and information in textual notebook-like format.
In MS Powerpoint you create/edit presentations, slides and shows for presenting the content to audiences in meeting.

Microsoft office is a popular office package for the microsoft windows operating system and includes ms word which is the word processor, for creation of documents. ms excel a spreadsheet and ms powerpoint which will combine them into a presentation, with pictures and effects in a slide show.these can be shown on a large screen timed with a speech for example or a simple email showing family pics and text. ms offers a powerpoint viewer for those who receive them as mail and have no use for the larger program they are replacements for the typerwriter, account ledgers and slide projector or overhead projector of the past

Both are different software programmes of Microsoft. MS Word is primary used for running matters. Certain functions of MS Excel may also be performed in MS Word like Table.
MS Power Point is another software which is used primarily for slide show

One is designed primarilly for word processing, MS Word. The other is for presentations, PowerPoint. You can use microsofts software for various tasks. But they are very similar in the way they are controled. So you shouldnt have much problem using all of them if you can use one well enough. If you are word processing use word, that is what it is designed for and when you send a file, ect. Everyone else will use word, for documents. And vice versa for power point if you are doing persentations.
