Why do your hands get so dry if you wash them a lot? (Doctors, etc)

And also why do they get so dry in the winter? My hands are exteremely dry and I put lotion on them everyday and once a day I apply this heavy duty lotion stuff. But not matter what I do they are dry and itchy because of the cold weather and I wash my hands a lot. Why does this happen?

washing your hands removed the natural oils...so thats why they dry out...as for winter, the cold dry air is the cause. Lather on lotion then slip on gloves before going outside. And try lotion based or moisturizing soaps

Soaps wash the natural oils out of skin, causing it to be dry. Either use a lotion type soap, or keep some lotion on the sink to moisturize after washing. Hot water tends to exacerbate the problem so use cooler water, too. Studies show it is the soap that kills germs, not the heat of the water.

Soap chemicals and water sucks the life out of hands. Perhaps your lotions have something in them that you are allergic to. I like Crabetree & Evelyn hand cream and keep it in the kitchen.

Good luck.

most soap we use is full of harmful chemicals that are absorbed into your body through your skin. buy some healthier soap from burt's bees or something from a coconut derivative (a more natural soap) without the drying sulfates (read the ingredients list). most lotions too are composed of synthetic chemicals- head to a health food store for something all natural. in the least use olive oil on your hands at night instead of lotion. watch what is in your shampoo also since you apply it with your hands. and drinking LOTS of water helps keep your skin hydrated.
