The Jews were in Jerusalem ages ago and built temples.
The non-Jewish semites where there for ages and have history.
Jesus was tried crucified there.
When Islam came into being they also built Mosques there.
It is, if I'm not mistaken, the Holiest place for Jewish. The holiest place for Christians are at least one of several, including Bethlehem where Jesus was born and the area by the sea where Jesus was Baptized. IT is the third holiest place for Islam after Media and Mecca.

Jerusalem is sacred to the Jews cos they were brought there by Moses with the instruction of God.
Jerusalem is sacred to the Christians cos their Messiah was born a Jew and died on the cross as King of the Jews.
Jerusalem is ah....not sacred to the muslims cos the muslims are defecating all over the place. They are only interested in jerusalem because God kicked their islamic ancestors out of the place when He brought the Jews into Canaan in the Exodus and the muslims (descendents of Ishmael) are now fighting against God using a bogus deity called allah and a shameless leader called muhammad (pibuh) who had sex with little girls and raped women after looting their possessions.

Both Christianity and Islam are "daughter" religions of Judaism. Thus the sanctity of Jerusalem was incorporated into the new religions along with many other tenets.

God commanded the Jews to build the temple here so He can dwell in that temple. Therefore, it is very holy to the Jews. To Christians, it is the place where the Lord Jesus was crucified, died, was buried, and rose from the dead. Mostly, because it is where He rose from the dead. To Muslims because according to a story, Muhammad rose to heaven here(dome of the rock).
