Who Invented Methadone

Most of the other answers start out correctly but journey off into a personal mission to warn of the ills of methadone. Yes it was invented by a German Dr. or group of Scientists. However they were not looking to cure opiate dependency. Remember Germany was at war for almost 10 years before America joind WWII. It became increasingly difficult for Germany to get Opium from Asia Minor in order to produce pain killers for it's injured soldiers. Hitler ordered Germany's Scientists to come up with a synthetic painkiller. Methadone is what was created. Methadone is used to get addicts off of heroin and to treat chronic pain. Unlike opiate based pain killers, methadone does not produce a euphoric effect after the first day or two. It also bonds so hard to the pain receptors of the body, that no other pain meds can bond. In effect it blocks opiates. If you take methadone you can't take heroin or demoral etc. and get high. For some one who has an inoperable condition which leaves them in chrinic pain, methadone can be a good choice. While other painkillers give the user the euphoria or high methadone doesn't do this. This greatly reduces the risk of abuse ie taking more pills than prescribed to get a buzz. This is the dangerous part. If you take extra methadone you won't get the buzz your after. It will however slow your resperatory and circulatory systems down. In many cases leading to death.

I dont know any name. But it was someone who thought they were solving a social issue that didnt think of the long term problems.I believe that the dependancy and physical adiction is worse than Heroin. The cost to supply it and run the maintanance clinics is very high.people are sometimes using it to get high instead of heroin, not as something to help wean them of of it.Many people are on it for life.so I dont see where it actually did a greater good.maybe stiffer regulations as to how long they anticipate useage should have been placed so it would actually be a solution and not a new substance addiction itself.I want to add that after reading some answers Many people arent aware of how Methodone is abused on the streets so to say.In N.Y.C. where im originally from Ive seen the abuse. My mother,my aunt and several people I know had a life long involvement with methodone.I myself had taken it a few times because it gave the same "down/mellow" felling of heroin that I sniffed for years in the past. Many people sell their "meth"as its called to people who cannot get on the "program" due to abusing it,some just like the feeling. And you can do other drugs and methodone at the same time.It intensifies the high.I speak from experience, and what I seen others do my entire life. Its sad but I come from one of the most notorious heroin distribution areas in the U.S. and I know the deal about this stuff.so unless you lived it you dont know the whole story of what really goes down.

Methadone is now used to wean you from opiates mostly,,the withdrawls are very sickening and the methadone definately helps with a person who seriously want to quit this addiction...Is a nastey addiction and the side effects of not having them are serious,,that is why they have methadone clinics,,they are for the serious ppl who want to get better,,and are monitored very closely in canada,,they are not very many of these clinics and you have to drive far to get to one,,but in the us there are plenty and the doctors at these clinics are very strict,,you do not get high from this stuff as one said,,they amount they give you depends on your addiction and regular blood tests are taken to ensure that the user needs this drug,,,here you have to drink the liquid form in front of the pharmasist,,you are not allowed to take it home till you have proven that you are not still using,,and if you are able to take it home is only for a few days,,you must have clean pee before this even happens,,therefor no chance to "get high""" it does help in quitting the opiates and wish these clinics were more accessable in canada,,as the pain killer addiction is growing rapidley,,even in the smaller cities like mine,,4000pop,,and about one quarter using,,thats almost have the town and am very serious here,,we need help in canada,,,so we do not have to drive 3 hours to get to c clinic,,,these are everyday ppl,,not junkies,,,ppl with jobs, family, and have a life,,it's sad normal ppl hooked on opiates and it;s getting worse.
