I was thinking of making a pasta salad with pesto sauce and some canned wild pacific pink salmon. Does anybody know if this is a bad idea, or if it is likely to taste ok?

Here's a perfect recipe for you from Florence Italy.
pesto sauce for salmon or, bass
3 teaspoons pesto
2 tablespoons vinegar
2 cloves chopped garlic
1/4 cup virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon black mustard seeds
dash salt.
you can double it if the salad is large.
If a five star restaurant in Florence combines pesto with fish, it must taste good.

I think it would depend on if you like the two flavors separately - as they both have inherently strong and distinct flavors on their own. I personally would not want to mix them. I'd probably opt to use chicken in the salad vs salmon if I were going to use the pesto sauce. Or if using salmon, use an italian type dressing, or a lemony dill. Just a suggestion :)

It wouldn't be my instinct to pair salmon and pesto, I would more likely opt for a white fish.

This having been said, I have prepared fish for hundreds of people over the years, but I don't eat it. I have an allergy.

What I would do is try this on a small scale first. If you like it thats all that counts.

I think the pesto might be good on whiter fish. I like fennel tops. I have stuffed a few rainbow trout with a parsley and licorice basil and they came out well. That would be pretty close to a pesto.

I think it sounds wonderful.
:)

If you google salmon and pesto you gets lots of recipes. I have not tried it but I am going to.

I liked grilled salmon with pesto. So, I don't see why your idea wouldn't be a winner.

Give it a shot!!!!

No salmon is one of the fish that does not go with anything much like coon or rat.
