i believe only Taivo has really got it. Eclesia- (Ekklessia) comes from the verb ekkalo (ek+kalo= out+call)) and that means to call out, to call someone to come somewhere. In democratic ancient Athens the gathering of the people to decide over different issues of the city-state was called Ekklesia tou demou = the calling to come to the gathering of the citizens, of the people.
So the calling of the christians was named ekklesia and with time the word ekklesia took mainly the meaning of the place(church), because that's were the christians would come to to meet. But the verb ekkalo is still used in the original way in greek (for instance to call a conference) and the word ekklisi (the call out) as well (for instance a call out for help).

The word “church,” which is derived from κÏ
ÏιακοÌÏ, kuriakoÌs, “of or belonging to the Lord,” represents in the English Versions of the Bible of the New Testament the Greek word εÌκκληÏιÌα, ekkleÌsiÌa; Latin, ecclesia. It is with the signification of this word ekkleÌsia as it meets us in the New Testament, and with the nature of the society which the word is there used to describe, that the present article is concerned.
a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation (Jewish synagogue, or Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both): - assembly, church. -STRONG DIC.

Some more modern Bible translations use "assembly" for the Greek word "ecclesia", as referring to a group of people who have been called to assemble together.
