In the first verse, dealing with the first day of creation, the text states: ‘God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night’.
In the fourth verse, dealing with the fourth day, the text states: ‘And God made two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth’.
If this is literally true, is it not a grave irrationality?
If the sun and the moon were not created until the fourth day, there cannot have been light and darkness, or morning and evening, as stated to occur in the earlier days.

But, it always states the first thing GOD created was the Darkness. Not the 2 lights or the light but darkness.
In that darkness GOD did not forsee the unthinkable. Demons exsisted. And, created the light to expel the demons so that demons would only exsist at night.
I have been preaching that for 20 years. Since I was 12 years old.
Opps also forgot to add: The lesser light os to spot the demons which inhabitated the Earth. And, for those that are worthy the lesser light will expel the demons to the acves they eblonged.
The lights are very spiritual. And, also when you first make a sun and a planet the sun would not reach a planet spontaneously.

God can do anything.
Under even the scientific view the Moon may not have been in orbit around the Earth at the point where it was formed and rotating with seas.
There was, for a long time a theory, that the Moon was formed by a fragment of the Earth ejecting during the formation. It is also possible the Earth capture a smaller body that was being thrust out from the sun. So when the Moon came to be around the Earth, no one, not Science, not NO ONE can say for sure.
There's also a part I wrestled with and that's the Firmament. The Bible speaks of water above and water below. It is entirely possible that the Water above would a much thicker atmosphere than we have today. A water rich one that floated above the Earth and this became known as the Firmmaent and when it eventually cleared into NO2 as we know it today with CLOUDS being the remainng water vapor or Firmament then we could actually SEE the SUN and MOON from the Earth for the first time.
Imagine Earth like Venus, you can see night and day, but you don't know where it's coming from. Someone on Venus may NOT be aware of the SUN because the clouds keep you from seeing the disk clearly. IF Venus had a moon, you wouldn't see it either. Someone on Jupiter wouldn't see the Moons of Jupiter.
So, once the thick "fog" of water or whatever it was broke up and became clear air with clouds you can finally see the Moon and Sun.

So you're saying that the only source of light is the sun? And for darkness, well that was made on the first day & the moon & stars on the fourth day to illuminate the darkness. Where is the conflict there? We're talking about God here. Are you implying that our human brains, which science has proved we use less than 10% of, are more capable of figuring out Creation than the One who did the creating? Why split hairs? You either believe or you don't. Faith is required & He gave all of us a measure of that too.

Your error is to assume that light only comes from the sun! Or that you need the sun in order to have the concept of day and night.
What is really needed for day and night is simply a light source and a rotating earth. Since the Bible tells us that the sun was created on day 4, then it must mean that prior to that there was a temporary light source, a divine light source. It is not light from any creation, stars or sun, since they will only be made on Day 4. In Revelation it says that the new heavens and new earth will have no sun, for God's glory will be the permanent source of light. So there's no need to charge the Bible with any error of logic.

well God himself is light. we also have electricity to provide light for us at night or when there is a dark area. however those are not the point. the point is God is God and God can do anything. why is it that at night when we look into the sky it is dark. however the sun is still shining. all we see though is the reflection of the sun on the moon. just like when we look in the day time we see nothing but light. why is it that when we look off to the side we dont see a dark sky. hard to really explain things. just like God is everyweres at once.

God first created the Day and Night, the later text is just referring back to the first step, seperating a greater light from the lesser light.

Notice also that this is a separate creation myth from the one in the next chapter. In this first version man and woman are created at the same time. The second chapter has Adam created first, and Eve created later from Adam's rib.

Well this can be rationalized.... I don't believe it so it won't be me doing it.
Just an add on for ya.
Where is the mention of the various solar systems we are now learning about? Surely a Divine book would have included mention of the "universe" in it's entirety and explain both purpose and meaning. ie) the sun is for daylight. The most medieval explanation and it's taken for "gospel".
