The less you know about them the better once you start fooling around and installing new software, formating hard drives, upgrading, etc your asking to mess something up. Is your laptop a mac or a PC. In order to become good at trouble shooting and maintance you must read books or goto classes it would be difficult to tell you everything we know over the internet. Create a user account with power user option and stay logged off the administrator account is a good start.

The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to back everything up weekly to an out side source, DVD RW, external HD. That way if your computer crashes you can restore back to normal.

Backups include personal data, which is the most expensive part of any computer!

Backups can also include configuration, its good to have a good configuration before you backup.

Always leave it Functioning and Enabled!

Make sure your Anti-Virus Software is set to monitor your E-Mail Program that you send and receive E-Mail with!

Do not temporarily disable your Anti-Virus Software as it is too easy to forget to re-enable it!

Always keep your computer updated with the latest Security Patches! Microsoft releases them frequently as infected E-Mail Attachments may attempt to exploit program vulnerabilities.

Do not open attachments unless you are absolutely certain of the sender and the contents!
