Most babies show empathy by the age of 3 months. There was a study done, when a baby is played a tape of himself crying, he will not cry, but if he is played a tape of another baby crying, he will start to cry along with that baby. Sympathy is learned (learning to feel sorry for someone) , while empathy (feeling compassion for someone and understanding their grief) seems to be a natural instinct!

Around 2 or 3 at the latest. If they do not show by 3 or 4, there may be something wrong.

It depends on the child, My son has been giving other babies pacifiers when they cry since he could crawl. But my little brother still shows no sympathy and he's 16...

it varys so much. my boy seems to have more sympathy for our cat than for us.don't worry about the age. worry about the sympathy. it'll show up. if you have it, your child will have it! and the simple fact that you asked that question lets me know your kid will have it sooner than you think!

Oh boy, my youngest started very young. At like 18 months he was worried about the dog having been to the vet. He wanted to swaddle the dog and comfort him. He knew the dog got a shot. Our son had immunizations and hated them so naturally he wanted to comfort his dog. He thought the dog should have a sippy cup of milk, too.

It's very individual..
My youngest has always been a softie... from 18 months on she was always patting her sister's shoulder when she'd get upset... or cry when someone else was sad...
My oldest? He's 21... I'll let you know when he figures it out..

as a mother of 4 i can tell you each child is different but don't worry if there not showing it now you can teach them you both will be OK
