once a person has been declared brain dead-the only way the rest of the body functions is WITH life support-once the machines are shut off-the person's other systems eventually shut down.

when the brain dies-the other organs such as the heart, lungs, etc are no longer being told what to do in a matter of speaking, so they don't work anymore except for by machine

a person is kept on life support until the family decides what they want to do as far as donating organs or to wait until other family members can arrive at the hospital to say goodbye to their loved one

While there may be no significant brain activity for thought process. the brain still sends out signals to the body. Although life support is basically just living for him, keeping the body functions working.

Brain dead is considered dead.

Machines can keep your organs working but you are dead once the brain checks out.
