(counting all the generations in the OT, back to Adam, also known as the Ussher date), and Christ didn’t come onto the scene until 2000 years ago, what did Christians call themselves during the intervening 2,400 years?

Actually, God has gone through 3 distinct phases IN HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH MANKIND.

01 - First he was a Tribal God, known by the name of El, (not to be confused with El and Asherah.) He was simply known by his name, there were no specific no-no's except one and your own moral guidance. There were no written books or laws.

Time frame: 4000 B.C.E. to around 1500 B.C.E.

02 - Second, he was known as the God of Abraham, and the I AM God (aka Jehovah / Yahweh). There are now written laws. A covenant with the children of Abraham to be numbered as the Stars (meaning, so many as to be innumerable). There are now over 600 commandments and a promise of a sacrifice to restore mankind.

Time frame: 1500 B.C.E. to 33.5 A.D.

03 - We now have the sacrifice and the new "spiritual Israelites" known as Christians, worshipping Jehovah God. The old laws have "been done away with" with the sacrifice and "new covenant" with man through the sacrifice. The new knowledge is now being written down and a promise of a perfect future is promised.

Time frame: 33.5 A.D. to Present

AS SEEN BY RELIGIOUS LIBERALS & HISTORIANS

the three largest groups within the primitive Christian movement:

1. Jewish Christian movement:
2. Pauline Christianity
3. Gnostic Christianity

Some Gnostics formed separate congregations. Others joined existing Pauline Christian groups. Still others were solitary practitioners.

In addition to the above three main groups, there were many smaller religious communities, which have been referred to as Matthean Christianity, Johannine Christianity, etc.

**************************************************

There were no Christians to call themselves anything. Christ's teachings are what started people calling themselves Christians.

Before that there were kings to set religions. They followed God and His laws given to Moses. Prophets also were blessed by God with His words and wisdom. These eventually became the Old Testament.
