i think it is organic and hereditary. my brother was bi polar, and my mother i believe was bi polar, but she died when i was 22 so i don't really know. i also worked in a psychiatric hospital for 30 years. and there were many families, who were bi polar, and had one or more siblings, that were bi polar. my brother had his first episode when he was about 40, when his wife left him and took his kids, before that he had no problems. that leads me to believe that trauma, set off his bi polar illness. i don't believe it caused his illness, because many people get separated, and lose their kids, but they do not get psychotic, with extreme bi polar symptoms that my brother did. medication helped him and he found a new girlfriend. do not let you bi polar problem, stop you from having a serious relationship. just because you are bi polar does not mean you cannot be a loving, parental person and enjoy a good relationship , as long as you look after yourself, and take the advice of you doctor and mental help people. you are not a lesser person, and you deserve what everybody else wants in society, that is to give and receive love, have a family, and a full filling life. some one out there loves you for the way you are good luck to you

The genes you inherited are responsible for the disorder. You probably have a parent and/or one or more near relatives with the disorder. Not all affected family members will be full blown bi-polar....some will have depression all of the time; others will have depression most of the time; still others may have depression with occasional hypo manic mood swings.
Realizing you have a problem is half the battle. If you know you have a problem and are determined to overcome it, you will stay on your medication and keep your appointments with the doctor.
If you do find someone you are interested in, be up front with them before getting too involved. Explain your condition and what you are doing about it. Then make sure your courtship is long enough for the other person to see you when you are up and when you are down. If he/she sticks around, you will know it is TRUE LOVE.

The cause of bipolar disorder is not well understood, although evidence suggests that the disorder runs in families.3 Your living environment and family situation may also play a role in the disorder. Episodes of depression and mania may be caused by a problem with certain brain chemicals called neurotransmitters.
Antidepressant medications can trigger a manic episode in a person who is bipolar. This may occur, however, before someone is diagnosed as bipolar but while he or she is seeking treatment for an episode of depression.
Sleep deprivation or substance abuse, including caffeine, can cause a person with bipolar disorder to have a manic episode.

here is the deal: most research points to genetics as the cause. My grandfather was bipolar, I have it and a cousin does. My father also has a severe anxiety disorder.
So anyways i met my girlfriend while still trying to find the right medication. We have been together 2 years now. Just be open about things.

Bipolar Disorder is hereditary. It is a chemical imbalance in the brain. It's triggered by trauma in adulthood. Get in a relationship but don't push your crap on him. Relax!

Bipolar disorder sure seems to be common... lucky they have come up with so many new ssri drugs to deal with the outbreak, eh? I frankly think that it might be part of the whole "disease mongering" phenomenon.... making up diseases to benefit the pharmaceutical companies. If you would like to have access to learning an energy therapy that will very much augment your drugs, or might in time actually replace them, go to http://www.emofree.com/AffiliateWiz/aw.aspx?B=1&A=529&Task=Click&TargetURL=emofree.com
To learn more about your drugs, go to http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/SSRI-Crusaders/
God bless!
