Any one doing something fun for Black history month? I am teaching my son about the black baseball league's & about Mardi Gras & because chinese New Year is here we are doing chinese history. I want him to be open on history every day!

I'm glad you asked this question. Especially
about black baseball league. I had the priviledge
of seeing the great Satchel Paige pitch.
{now I'm dating myself} Of course I was just
a kid,but I'll never forget it. He was on his way
back down from the Major Leagues and was
pitching in the minors but it was a thrill. Have
your son look up his records.

Discuss the top Black / African American leaders in history.

Make diagrams showing the Underground Railroad.

Identify 3 people who helped slaves.

Discuss why slaves wanted to be free men / persons.

Build old ship models - discuss how slaves were transported and sold.

Have child interview an older black neighbor.

Discuss values and how they (do or don't) differ between races.

Discuss why some Blacks have proposed repayment for their ancestor's suffering.

Invite an older "Black" person to your home for an interview!
Ask them to bring pictures.

View Roots and discuss.

Teach geography an history of Africa, listen to african music, the internet has african radio station, compare african music to current trends in "black" music in the US.

View older movies and cartoons that show "blacks" in a derrogatory way (ie 1920-50's), discuss prejudice and acceptance. etc....
