OK so the terminology wasn't correct, you meant stereo sound instead of surround sound. Both will most likely sound better than your TV's built in speakers.

I doubt your wanting to run out & buy a surround system, but if you do, avoid Sony surround sound receivers since they are very low quality & cost as much as other brands of much higher quality. Yamaha, Denon & Onkyo (In that order.) are the highest quality surround sound receivers I know of in the $300 to $2,000 price range.

(Also don't buy anything by Bose, the are extremely over price & very low quality.)

If your TV has a yellow, red & white (Sometimes black instead of white.) RCA jacks, simply plug the red & white jacks to any red & white line input on your stereo. (CD, AUX, Tape, MD, DAT, etc.) "Phono" is the only input jacks you can't use.

If you don't have RCA jacks on your TV, but a headphone jack, use a 1/8" stereo male plug to stereo RCA adapter.

You can find them at any computer store, any place that sells audio equipment, Radio Shack & most big box retail stores.

First we have to establish that you're not going to get real surround sound from a stereo (two speaker) setup so your question was not worded properly.

If you're just interested in getting sound from your TV to your stereo then you will need to look in the back of your TV set or look in your manual to see if you have audio outputs (red and white RCA jacks) If you don't you will not be able to. If you do, then all you will need is a pair of audio cables long enough to reach from the TV to your stereo. You will need to hook it up to an AUX input of your stereo.

If you are using a cable box, the cable box may also have those audio output jacks and that is an alternate place to hook up to your stereo.

Well your system has to have surround sound capabilities on it. Your system will have a button that says surround sound. If no button, then you do not have it. On the newer systems this is a standard item. If possible, you would hook up your TVs audio output to the stereo system input. Then when the TV is on you press the button that the TV is connected to. Surround sound is like sound coming from 3 or 4 directions. To me it is Super Stereo. With my 6 speaker set up, you can hear sounds like they are coming from behind you.

Below is the URL for a complete explanation of surround sound.

Most TV's have only a right, & a left channel stereo output.
Surround sound requires a front set of right, & left channels as well as a back (rear) right, & left channels for a total of four channels. If your TV, or your stereo have only one pair of right, & left channels then you won't get surround sound simply by connecting to your stereo.

If you really want to create surround sound with your present TV then I suggest that you purchase one of the many Home Theatre sound systems that are out there. They have a separate audio receiver that can pick up surround sound signals that are available on some of the DVD's, as well as Satellite, or Cable.

In order to take advantage of surround sound, you need to have a surround sound video source. TV is not a surround source. If you had a DVD player, satellite or cable set top box, then you have a surround sound source. In combination with a surround sound receiver, you can get a 5.1 or higher surround sound speaker setup.

The only way you are going to get surround sound is through optical or coaxial audio cable.

If you just have standard TV or basic cable, then you are only going to get a 2 channel stereo audio.

you cannot have a surround sound if you have only a stereo effect and only have a two speakers. to have this surround effect you a player that has surround effect or it has a different or more channels, like a 5.1 it means 2 front speakers 1 center speakers 2 rear surround speakers and .1 for the sub woofer. if you have all of this and you played either a music or a movie DVD,it will sounds great you feel that you're in a live concert or it sounds like real if you watch a digital movie.

If you see on the back or side of your tv, you'd probably see the a/v jack (red & white for audio, yellow for video). You can connect your stereo directly to the red and white jack if your stereo have output red and white jack. If not, buy a converter cable so you can connect it from mic jack on your stereo to audio jack on your tv. a mic jack is like the headphone jack.

You have to put the audio wires from you stereo into your TV. If you don't have those wires you might have to buy them. The wires are really cheap.

You need a surround receiver and 5 speakers + a powered
subwoofer for an authentic basic surround sound system.
