Doctors do not get a commission but the drug companies can check to see how many RX a doctor writes of their drug. If the doc doesn't write enough, the rep may not come in to give samples of it any more. The laws are very strict on what kind of things can be given to doctors. A drug company can be fined millions of dollars for bribery or kickbacks. That is strictly illegal. a doc will prescribe the best medicine that the patient's health plan will allow. some health plans are strict about all generic drugs and will not give new name brand drugs without a VERY good reason and prior authorization.

Judging by how freaking retarded my last psych doc was, I'd say that they get SOMETHING for doleing out certain meds. There is NO psychiatrist that is stupid enough to think that yanking a severely/chronically depressed *they kept changing the diagnoses, i don't know what it is now* teenage girl of the high doses of two different meds to put her on a minimal dose of a new med is a good idea. Hardly even spoke to me before he made this decision. The kicker? I was doing just fine on the original meds, and about a week into abilify *the new med* I had this weird panic attack thing at school, blacked out, and somehow wound up in a hospital bed being told i'd gotten myself expelled, jumped out of a car and bruised my spleen. Legal action should have been taken, be it against the school for their negligence *that of which i can vouch for, as there's a good 6+hour chunk i don't remember* or the psych for malpractice, as we're sure that my mental state was incredibly screwed because he messed with my meds. Of course, my parents don't have 5grand for a lawyer and by the time I'm old enough to afford one myself *maybe stable is a better word than old* it'll be too late to do anything about it.
So yeah, they gotta get something for pushing certain meds.

It is illegal and unethical for a doctor to take money in exchange for prescribing certain brands of medication. What does happen though, is several different pharmaceutical sales people bombard the doctor's offices with samples as well as kiss *** by buying lunches and providing other complimentary items. That's how they get the doctor's to prescribe their medications. But, they cannot flat out offer money in exchange.

absolutely NOT! The drug companies do not get copies of what doctors prescribe per FEDERAL regulations. There is no way they could know if a doc is prescribing their meds or not.
