This is from the movie Signs. The character played by Mel Gibson is going through a faith crisis because of the loss of his wife in an accident and during his struggle in understanding God he begins his turn back toward God with this statement, although he does not fully embrace his faith again until the end of the movie.

People break down into two groups. When they experience something lucky, group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence. They see it as a sign, evidence that there is someone up there watching over them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck, a happy turn of chance. I’m sure that people in group number two are looking at those fourteen lights in a very suspicious way. For them, this situation is a 50/50. Could be bad. Could be good. But deep down they feel that whatever happens, they’re on their own. And that fills them with fear. Yeah. There are those people. But there are a whole lot of people in group number one. When they see those fourteen lights, they’re looking at a miracle. And deep down they feel that whatever is going to happen there will be someone there to help them and that fills them with hope. So what you have to ask yourself is what kind of person are you. Are you the kind that sees signs. Sees miracles. Or do you believe that people just get lucky. Or look at the question this way. Is it possible that there are no coincidences?

So my question is. Are you in group one? You see miracles and the hand of God around you and thereby are filled with hope? Or are you in group two? You see everything as a roll of the dice. And whatever happens, you’re on your own and that fills you with fear.

Please answer simply. Group one. OR Group two. Which is it?

That is NOT a simple question so it can't be answered simply. I'm a flip flopper. On an every day basis, I see so many little miracles that happen around me that may or may not be coincidences, but I look at them and think to myself there is a Higher Being who is watching over me. In those instances I always try to express my Gratitude to whomever is "out there". On the other hand, I take a look at the bigger picture, that is what is going on in the world, the wars, the genocide, the suicide bombers and I think, "How can a perfect God allow these things to happen and I slide over to Group 2 and think I'm on my own. But that does not frighten me I can live with that and the possibility that I will cease to exist after death.

Group 3... Where I see everything that happens as a culminative effect of our actions and choices in life.. I see that whatever happens depends on me and not on random influence, or divine inspiration. What happens to us in life.. luck, trajedy it is all a consequence of our choices, actions and decisions throughout our lives. Whatever happens in my life I am responsible for making the decisions or completing the actions that led to that circumstance.. as such I live my life in a way that ensures I make decisions and do things that I will not regret nor fear the consequences of. I am on my own, but I know that there is nothing to fear when you choose to make the right decisions in life.

Its true there is no coincidences... we are all the authors of our own personal pages in the book of life. Decision, action and occurence is not random it is culminative...

Group Two.

And it makes me feel good that I accept things the way they are and don't try to make up magical explanations for everything.

Two. But I am not fearful: though I go through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil -- because I am the smartest son of a b--ch in the valley.
