If the blood its red, then the blood is coming from the rectum, usually caused by hemorrhoids or constipation, and is nothing to be worried about - mostly just an annoyance. If the blood appears black or purplish, it means there is internal bleeding somewhere in the digestive tract, which needs to be examined by a doctor.

It may mean nothing of a serious nature, such as a small fisure which is near the anal opening and becomes "scratched" as the stool passes it. However, it could have far more serious causes, such as polyps in the descending colon, or various irritations within the walls of the descending colon, to name just a couple. You really need to make an appointment with a proctologist for a thorough examination. Depending on your family medical history, and your age, you should have a colonoscopy. Neither the preparations for nor the actual procedure are enjoyable...but it doesn't really hurt, and the possibility of colon cancer should be ruled out immediately. It is a procedure which IS covered by insurance. I know, too, that there are certain tests which can be started at home, and then the specimen is taken to your regular doctor or to the lab of his/her choice. I truly urge you to make immediate plans to have this thoroughly checked out. I lost a dear friend and colleague to colon cancer, and she left behind a husband and two preschool daughters. Really sad. Good luck, and God speed.

It could mean you are bleeding internally
It could be colitis-- where you have ulcers in your colon and you they are bleeding and can get infected and then you will be running to the toilet a lot and you will be pooping white or yellow puss.
If this is just once, it could just be a hemmoriod.
**Go TO THE DOCTOR
(they will want a poop sample -- no older than 2 hours)
Please go to your doctor!!!
I was too embarassed to go to my doctor and got very, very ill,
until i had to go! I had to go to a Specialist.
It could just be hemmoroids.
Is your poo runny?
Are you making poo a lot?
if you are you need medicine to stop the internal bleeding.

besides the other answers - you may want to increase your fiber content in your diet or something to soften your stools so they are softer.
anything like this that persists over any reasonable time should be seen by a doctor

anytime you see blood in your stool...you need to get it checked out by a doctor to determine where it's coming from...If it is dark in color...it means that it is coming from higher in your digestive tract and that is not a good sign...if it's bright red...it's coming from lower in your digestive tract....probably nothing, but you still need to have it checked to rule out serious disease....
hope this helped
