Turn things around - ask them for money! Try it - it will work! And ... they will learn to avoid you!!!

When I have the extra money, I like to buy a ten dollar gift card to the local grocery chain, just for the panhandlers.

If there are several, I pick out the one that is the oldest looking one, as he will have the hardest time getting a good job. Or, I pick out the one that is closest to me at the red light. If I had the money, I'd get several grocery store gift cards to hand out.

Once they have the gift card, it is up to them whether they buy food or alcohol.

But the card can only be spent at the grocery chain.

The best way speaking from experience. Is too politely say that you dont have change.Dont be agressive with it. Because you dont know how they might react. But if you are brave like me...strike up a convo...find out their situation. But dont get to personal. So next time all they will do to you is smile or say hello. Not all "Transits" are bad people...just some with really bad luck.

I dont live in an area where you see that alot. I feel bad for them, when I do see them, but then again, youd think they could do something about their situation. My husband says they make good money, doing what theyre doing, so they just keep doing it. Ive only given money to one of them in my life, and it was this last Christmas. It did make me feel good. He said he was trying to get home for Christmas, but who knows, it may have not been the truth.

My suggestion to you would be, if they bother you, or you dont want to give them anything, just ignore them. I guess thats all you can do, really.*

One way is to just give them a piece of your mind. There is no need to lie or to give in if you honestly don't want to.

Another way is one I learned from a person who is hard of hearing. Make the sign for being a deaf-mute. I think you point your thumb at your ear and your pinky at your mouth in a back and forth motion. Maybe even grunt a little to go with it.

Politely!

Say "Hi!"and treat them as if they were any other passerby. Sometimes if I get a decent vibe from someone i'll offer to by them a coffee or something to eat! If they refuse....well then too bad.
Otherwise, tell them that you are unable to give them money because you have no change on you. Thats a pretty common approach.

LOL. That's crazy I know what you mean. I usually give them my change. But when I do not want to be bothered with them I tell them I'm FBI on a stake-out and not bother me right now, if they insist then I tell them I'll have them arrested for interfering with the investigation. It works like a charm.

Keep your head down and just walk by. Give your money to charities, not to people who will use it for drugs and alcohol. I would also complain to the police about feeling intimidated. They need to keep the street clear of bums.

I will not give money that might be used on cheap wine but I will offer to buy them food.

I'll shell out a dollar or two on occasion. Sure, I work hard for it, but I can spare it for the poor guy that may very likely die in the gutter.
