Religion forms a community. religion makes communitys stronger and survive because there is a common goal. If you study ancient cultures, the religion in what keeps them together and strong, and when religion is changed, that is when the fighting starts. then it may change and make sense, and the community gets stronger, but it does go hand in hand with community. It's possible. People do want to belong. I don't think all people who are a part of a religion are there for friends though. It's always nice to be a part of a group where you share the same ideas, regardless of what those ideas are.

I suppose that that is part of it. But a larger part is, I think, a result of many people having come to the US to avoid persecution for their religious beliefs -- starting with the Puritans.
