Water Pollution is a large set of adverse effects upon water bodies such as (lakes, rivers, oceans, groundwater) caused by human activities. Although natural phenomena such as volcanoes, storms, earthquakes etc. also cause major changes in water quality and the ecological status of water, these are not deemed to be pollution. Water pollution has many causes and characteristics. Increases in nutrient loading may lead to eutrophication. Organic wastes such as sewage impose high oxygen demands on the receiving water leading to oxygen depletion with potentially severe impacts on the whole eco-system. Industries discharge a variety of pollutants in their wastewater including heavy metals, organic toxins, oils, nutrients, and solids. Discharges can also have thermal effects, especially those from power stations, and these too reduce the available oxygen. Silt-bearing runoff from many activities including construction sites, deforestation and agriculture can inhibit the penetration of sunlight through the water column, restricting photosynthesis and causing blanketing of the lake or river bed, in turn damaging ecological systems. Pollutants in water include a wide spectrum of chemicals, pathogens, and physical chemistry or sensory changes. Many of the chemical substances are toxic. Pathogens can obviously produce waterborne diseases in either human or animal hosts. Alteration of water's physical chemistry include acidity, conductivity, temperature, and eutrophication. Eutrophication is the fertilisation of surface water by nutrients that were previously scarce. Even many of the municipal water supplies in developed countries can present health risks.

Water pollution is a serious problem in the global context. It has been suggested that it is the leading worldwide cause of deaths and diseases, and that it accounts for the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.

The USA, Canada, and Western Europe have the strictest environmental laws in the world. The rest of the world ranges from good laws to no laws. So you can do several things.

First, only buy products made in these parts of the world. Everything you buy from elsewhere increases pollution and you are the reason.

Push your groups and politicians to really think globally. All environmental initiatives have to be embraced by all countries or they are worthless. There is no need to reduce pollution in the USA by 0.01% while the levels in third world countries are increasing by many fold every year.

Lastly, support attacking the larger sources first. For example the largest source of dioxin in the US is not industry, but back yard trash burning. USEPA admits they can do nothing about this, but they are going to push industry to spend millions of dollars for new technology where the difference may not even be measurable. Common people are the biggest sources of pollution, but they do not police themselves and blame everyone else.

Polluted water stinks! literally Seriously, in order to stop this, EVERYBODY has to do their part And that is the hardest part. You can start by buying only eco-friendly detergents and cleaners. You can also encourage everyone you know to do their part. I think polluted water to some degree will always be with us as I think the world is overcrowded. Encourage your legislatures to lobby for stricter laws for all waste water. The cleaner it is when it goes into river or lake, the cleaner the body of water will stay. The chemicals we put on crops need to be monitored better and there should be more being done to create biologically friendly insectisides and fertilizers. The wetlands need to be preserved also, as they are often the first place water goes when seeping thru the ground. And people need to stop dumping their garbage in the nearest river or lake. Flooding is a big problem that causes lots of unsafe stuff to enter into our waterways. I couldn't even tell you how to begin to solve that problem.
