The original Model-T used ethanol, but it was replaced by gasoline, which just emerging as the cheapest form of fuel because were practically swimming in it at the time. Today's gasoline engines can still run on 15% ethanol, which is being produced today. 85% ethanol is in production, but you need a special engine to use it. You need a specially designed engine to run on whatever type of fuel it uses, which is why Ford had to redesign the Model-T engine when they switched to gasoline.

Methane is a little to dangerous for the general public. It has to low of a flash point and burns way too hot.But a lot of people around here use natural gas and the conversion kit isn't all that pricey. The only down fall I see is availability of your fuel only select stations carry it.

I know of conversion kits that allow you to run a gas engine on propane. A diesel engine that is owned here locally is run on used vegetable-based oil that was used to cook french fries at the local fast-food joint.
