Would anyone suggest calling the IRS toll free number to ask tax questions?

Depends on what you are calling about. I've had friends that have gotten good information from that number. But that information tends to be more like "what form do I fill out if...."

...It is NOT the same kind of ideas / advice/ information/ knowledge that a good CPA will have for you. However, it is much cheaper :)

The IRS personnel that answer the 800 number are often able to provide basic info, but you (1) cannot rely on that info (becuase they are often wrong) and (2) you have to realize that these folks have very little or no tax training (they input keywords into their computer as you talk and it tells them what to say).

If you have any significant tax question, you should research it yourself and/or hire a professional.

I've gotten some good information there on occasion, but be prepared to be on hold for a long time, and navigating the menu to actually get to talk to a person can be an adventure.
