Green is a mild color in terms of Light/Dark. It doesn't make things too bright in night vision goggles, but it doesn't make them too dark either.

Green - In different shades of it. Why? Well, this is was told back in trainning.

First off, concealment is always taken into consideration. The brighter the lights you use, the more you give away your position. So, using white, bnlue or yellow is already out of the question.
Your only other options were to be red or green. Using red would emmit less light but using it for NODs (Night Vision Gogles) wouldn't be quite beneficial for soldiers especially in combat simply because it is too dark as opposed to the color green. If you use red, you'd have a very had time to distinguish patterns and objects as compared to green.
