Could it be that you are spending more time with non-christian friends than with Christ? Are the old friends dumping a lot of guilt on you because you are choosing fun that doesn't have negative consequences? See if you can hang out with Christians that have a passion for God. Their zest for life and exuberance will make it easier for you to unleash your fun self.

Once upon a time there was a national park at the edge of an incredibly huge water fall and cliff. There was a fence near the edge to keep people, pets, etc. from falling over the edge. The "cool" people preferred to be dangerous and hang out on the other side of the fence on the narrow ledge, all the time. Yes they were so cool (they thought) because they spent all their time on a narrow strip of land between a cliff and a fence, and complained about how boring everyone else's lives were. While the safe people had a whole park to party in and partied hearty.

Limits are fences to keep yourself safe. The safe life is only boaring when we spend all our time with our nose poking through the fence. There is so much more to life than the no-nos. The yes-yeses are so much more laid-back, stressless and fun! Look around, you have 99.99% of a world to play in (avoid active volcanos). Don't fall victim to the hype that doing wrong things is fun.

By the way, loving Christ is not religious. Loving "the adherence to codified beliefs and rituals" is religious. I'm sure you knew that, but other readers might get confused.

Religion doesn't equal God and vice versa. You don't have to live under another man's set of rules to live a good life. Religion is man made, that's why you feel oppressed.

God doesn't intend for you to feel the way you do. You can know God and still have fun. Sounds like you feel scared to live and that's not God's intention. That is the intention of some religions which is why it's always a good idea to explore other religions or even have none at all.

I do not believe any religion is right or has all the answers. If they say they do, get away! Seriously. I felt the same as you when I was a Christian. Someone told me to look into Unitarian Universalism and it really helped. It's less rigid than most religions and you're free to think and ask lots of questions. Alot of religions (or shall I say religious people) discourage that.

God wants you to make up your own mind. You're going to stumble and you're going to make mistakes. That's life. I would imagine that He would probably want your faith & love because you fully believe in what He is about, not because you're scared to think otherwise. Check out others ideas and don't feel you can't live your life or mess up because you'll automatically go to hell. That's not the case at all. That is not how God wants you to live.

Well it is probably because you know that you don't need "Christ in your life" to live a good life.
