No information is stored in the barcode. This is a Hollywood myth. The barcode is a way to read a set of numbers into the computer. If you look at the numbers on the bottom of the bar code, that's what the computer gets when they scan the barcode. The computer has a database that cross-references the bar code with meaningful data.

When you look at the bar code for a price tag, you usually see ten numbers with a check digit and the beginning and end. I'm making these up so my check digits won't work.
Example:
2 12345 67890 3

The first '2' is the first check digit. The last '3' is the last check digit. The first five digits (12345 in this example) are usually reserved for a particular manufacturer. If you look at several products of the same brand, you'll notice that the first five digits are the same.

The last five digits (67890 in my example) are the part number. Each product from a manufacturer will have a unique 5 digit part number on the bar code.
