I already know the symptoms..I guess what I am really looking for is a personal experience or something that I can relate to. The symptoms are often vague and unsupported by a detailed analysis.

I am a teenager.

i'm 20, and have a "genetic predisposition" to depression because my dad is bi-polar. however, i didnt truly experience depression until I was about 16. It started when a close friend committed suicide, and my boyfriend left for colorado for 9 months.

i lost interest in mostly everything that once brought me some joy

i ate more

slept all day

didnt want to go to school

didnt want to talk to anyone

i basically couped myself up at home all day. after a little while, my mom took me to a psychiatrist, because i was genuinely scaring her- it was very out of the ordinary for my personality. i got some help, counseling, and medication. however, i never found the right medication to help me. some worked for a little while and then their effect would wear off. some didnt work at all. some made it worse- some came with some hefty, trippy, side-effects.

the advice i can give you is, if you think you are depressed...please go and seek some help. your mental health is more important than youll ever know. it affects everything that you do <3

also- i sometimes, still feel depressed. i am currently on no medications and have somehow found a way to overcome it. i had no choice- medicine couldnt help me. so go help yourself...itll be the best thing you ever did.

If you have had several of the symptoms for longer than 2 weeks, you should get checked out. The symptoms are vague because no two people are the same, depression can show itself in a variety of ways, and some of the symptoms of depression can be caused by other things. For example, feeling tired all the time may be a sign of depression but it can also be caused by anemia, dieting, Epstein-Barr virus (mono) or simply not getting enough sleep.

I'd recommend talking to the adult family member you feel closest to first, before you do anything else.
A qualified professional can evaluate your symptoms and tell you whether you have depression. You and your family member can decide together which professional to see. Also, if you do have depression, you may not be the only one in the family with it. True depression doesn't go away by itself, so if you have it you will need help, but there are a variety of ways it can be treated.

If it's a friend you are worried about, the best thing you can do for them is to talk them into getting help, and offer to go with them if they are reluctant.

Well, I have depression and my mom suffers from it too. I sleep a lot more, hardly eat/forget to eat, cry about nothing, have no energy, don't care about anything, and my hygiene deteriorates.
I don't have it all the time, thank goodness. I actually have a job that I work about 45-60 hours a week for, but there are times that I skip days - usually before and after the weekend, when I have already had a couple of days off. It's WAY better when I'm busy.
When I say "have no energy", I mean barely drag myself to the bathroom to go. Seriously. Most of the time when it hits, I curl up in a ball on my bed and cover my head with the blankets, and moan when the phone rings, because I'm not going to answer it.
It's frustrating, embarrassing and really unhealthy.
I can get myself out of it though. It's worse in winter.
If you need more info, let me know...is this for personal or research?

Uhm, stop watching the SSRI commercials. If you think you are depressed, talk to someone like a counsellor, your parents, a teacher or a doctor, but watch out for doctors. They just want to give you medication. If your family can afford it, try therapy first. SSRI medication can make you crazy.

I would say if you don't feel like hanging out with your friends and in general feel like life is just terrible in every aspect and not worth living, you are depressed.
