Or would you prefer to buy a painting already prepared, from a shop or art dealer?
If you would commission a painting, how much would you expect to outlay?
Have you commissioned a painting before?

Just doing some market research. Thanks for your input.

I believe that art isn't supposed to be chosen to match one's interior decorating. It's much better to start with the piece of art, and then decorate around it. The reason: Finding a piece of art that you love isn't as easy as finding fabrics, paint colors, and furnishings that please you. You start with the hardest thing, and move toward the easiest.

If you go for a painting to match what's already in place, you'll end up with a decoration, not art.

I do a lot of commissioned paintings for various projects, and think it is a great way to make a room feel cohesive. The way is typically approach it is to find an artist whose work I love, and then give him / her samples of the fabrics and finishes in the room. It helps if you can tell the artist that you like a particular piece they've already done, but would prefer it in your colors. I really try not to be too terribly specific with the artist...I don't want the end product to feel contrived. And in most cases, if you end up not loving what that artist has painted for you, you don't have to buy it...they add it to their gallery, and sell it to someone else.

I usually pay anywhere from $1800 - $2500 for a 30 x 42" canvas. This is a framed price, and is net. List price for the same would be about 40% more.

i would buy one already complete, that way i can see the end result before commiting myself to paying. Ive seen too much commissioned art, music, etc. that turns out nothing like you had anticipated, even when youre fairly sure that you like the artist's style.
